June begins the summer travel season, where traditionally, gas prices will increase in any year, so motorists are feeling an extra punch this month, and will continue to see prices hover around the $5/gallon range through Labor Day weekend.
However, if you are planning to travel by car out of town this summer, keep in mind that while gas prices may be high in Huntsville, they are even higher in most states outside of Alabama.
According to AAA, the average gallon of gas in the U.S. is $5.014. Alabama as a state is averaging $4.631 per gallon, which puts Huntsville below the state average. The states in the Southeast are among those with the lowest average gas prices in the country, although the lowest average price can be found in Georgia, and that is still a whopping $4.484 per gallon. Florida reported the highest gas prices in the region, averaging $4.891 per gallon.
If you plan on driving in California this summer, you may want to save up some money, as gas averages $6.436 per gallon currently. Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Washington all report gas prices well over $5 per gallon this week.
