Their name may be Red Flags, but it’s smooth sailing for this band.

Meet the local group who are opening for The Avett Brothers’ Orion show on May 10th.

Huntsville born and raised

A solid group whose roots lead back to Huntsville High School, Red Flags is made up of Rocket City natives Bill Fowler, Alan Little, Judd Vowell and Hunter Copeland.

Although pockets of the group have played together in various bands over the years and held solo gigs in Huntsville, this is the first time the four have played all together.

“Hunter and Alan were in a band called Plaid back in college. Hunter and I were in a band called There From Here in college and again in Juice, more recently. Hunter, Judd, and I were in a band called The Crash up until about 6 months ago, and Alan has had a very established solo gig in town for a very long time. That’s a very long answer, but the history is important. We have never played together in a band before, despite knowing each other so well.”

Their biggest gig yet

Although Red Flags’ usual gigs are local bars and taprooms, they’ve got something a little different planned for May.

They’ve already booked the opportunity of a lifetime: opening for The Avett Brothers’ show at the Orion.

They were approached with the opportunity a little over 6 months ago, and immediately said yes:

“It’s amazing and a bit intimidating. We’re all veteran musicians and love this opportunity, but it’s also a huge gig in our hometown. We’re really happy to be in this spot, but it’s easily the largest stage and audience of our careers.”

Their singles “Alabama Sunburn” and “House on Fire” are out now on all streaming services. Leading up to the Orion show, two more singles called “The One” and “The Switch” will be released. Make sure to watch their social to stay updated!

You can catch Red Flags before the big show at these spots:

  • April 27th: Panoply Arts Festival
  • May 9th: Lumberyard with Jim Avett (The Avett Brothers’ dad)
  • June 21st: Three Caves

As for future plans, the band is taking it easy:

“We’re really just focused on enjoying this moment. There are no illusions of much more than playing some solid music and contributing to a great original music community here in Huntsville. We’ll do that as long as the phone keeps ringing.”

Bill Fowler
