Gov. Ivey issues State of Emergency ahead of weekend ice storm
Reading time: 2 minutes

Forecasts from earlier in the week showing several inches of snow have been amended to show more ice than snow (and high temperatures above freezing). However, Gov. Kay Ivey just issued a State of Emergency for 19 counties in Alabama ahead of what is now being predicted as an ice storm.
Counties include:
- Blount
- Cherokee
- Colbert
- Cullman
- DeKalb
- Etowah
- Fayette
- Frankln
- Jackson
- Lamar
- Lauderdale
- Lawrence
- Limestone
- Madison
- Marion
- Marshall
- Morgan
- Walker
- Winston
The state of emergency is effective immediately to allow any state resources to be in place.
“Based on the current forecast, we have a few concerns, including potentially dangerous driving conditions. For those reasons, I have issued a state of emergency for potentially impacted counties.
We are in close communication with our local and state partners and stand ready to provide support as conditions change. As impacts occur, we will assess needs in real time and respond quickly to ensure communities receive the assistance they need.”

The National Weather Service says most of North Alabama will see rain with surface temperatures above freezing through Sunday afternoon. However, temperatures are expected drop dramatically overnight into Monday, so icy roads could be a factor.
