Have you heard of this weird Tennessee Valley cuisine?
Reading time: 2 minutes
Chocolate gravy might sound weird if you’re not from North Alabama, but the delicious Southern Cuisine has a unique connection to the area.
Chocolate gravy is exactly what it sounds like: a gravy sweetened with cocoa powder to achieve a chocolatey taste. It’s popular across the Tennessee Valley and up to the Ozarks.
The history behind this weird + unique dish
While the exact origins of chocolate gravy are unknown, historians and chefs theorize the dish was created through trade that connected Spanish Louisiana and the Tennessee Valley.
They speculate that traditional Mexican breakfast chocolate paired well with the Southern sweet-tooth and love for biscuits. And thus, the legendary and weird cuisine known as chocolate gravy was born.
