Reading time: 2 minutes
Huntsville is the unofficial hockey capital of Alabama, and with good reason. The history of hockey in the Rocket City is a long and prestigious one, with the success of the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s hockey team and minor league hockey teams from the Huntsville Blast to the Channel Cats to the Havoc.
The Havoc will welcome back some of the past stars of the ice that played in Huntsville for their Legends Night on April 2 at the Von Braun Center.

Check out some of the legends of Huntsville hockey as the Havoc close out the season April 1 against Fayetteville, and see two games for the price of one as the Legends of Huntsville Hockey play at 5PM before the Havoc take the ice at 7PM.
Celebrating Huntsville’s rich hockey history
UAH began its hockey program in 1979, as Joe Ritch organized the inaugural Charger team and served as the team’s head coach. The Chargers won two D-III championships — in 1996 and 1998 — and made sic NCAA tournament appearances before the hockey program suspended operations in 2021 due to funding issues and lack of conference membership.
Professional hockey has been a mainstay in Huntsville since the Huntsville Blast came to town in 1993. Since then, Huntsville has been home to the Huntsville Channel Cats (1995-2000, 2003-04), the Huntsville Tornado (2000-01) and the Havoc, which has played in Huntsville since 2004.
