Help out Huntsville: Check out these 4 local volunteer opportunities

As the days get warmer, consider giving back to your community. These 4 local organizations provide impactful volunteer opportunities, perfect for earning service hours, expanding your network, or engaging with the Huntsville community.

1. A New Leash on Life

A New Leash on Life is a no-kill shelter that helps shelter Alabama’s homeless animals. This shelter has helped achieve a live release rate of over 90%. In comparison, years prior, it was less than 50%.

How you can help: A volunteer application will need to be filled out. Different ways to get involved with A New Leash on Life could be fostering any animals, being a pet transporter, helping do fundraising and so many other things.

2. Free 2 Teach

Free 2 Teach began with a retired teacher and their best friend, who, after volunteering at a local holiday gift drive, discovered a bin of untouched school supplies. The pair decided to create their drive specifically for teachers. Free 2 Teach helps provide local teachers from Madison and Limestone with free school supplies.

How you can help: Registration is required, and those who are 14 years or older can volunteer unaccompanied. Those who are 14 and under must volunteer with a parent or guardian. Volunteering opportunities include organizing shelves, sorting donations, or restocking the store.

3. Land Trust of North Alabama

Established in 1987, the Land Trust of North Alabama’s was founded because there was an effort to have development on the western slopes of Monte Sano. The Land Trust of North Alabama has preserved more than 10,000 acres across seven counties in North Alabama.

How you can help: There are many opportunities to get involved, including: trail care, team building for a company, and special events.

4. Manna House

Manna House is a food distribution program for the Huntsville community.

How you can help: They have nightly distribution on Monday, Wednesday + Thursday from 3-6PM and volunteers can come from 1-6:30PM. They also have a backpack program, where volunteers can help on Wednesdays from 12:30-2:30PM.
