Here’s how rent in the Huntsville metro compares in Alabama

Folks who have recently moved here in the Huntsville metro area already know that rent these days is pretty steep in the Rocket City. And information from the Waller, Weeks and Johnson Rental Index shows that rent in the Rocket City is among the most expensive of the Alabama metros areas.

According to the Waller, Weeks and Johnson Rental Index, average rent in the Huntsville metro is the third highest among all Alabama metro areas, ranking behind only the Daphne MSA and Tuscaloosa MSA.

The data shows where rents should be — based on a history of rents — compared with actual current rents.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) defines cost-burdened families as those “who pay more than 30% of their income for housing including utilities and may have difficulty affording necessities such as food, clothing, transportation, or medical care.”

Rent in the Huntsville metro remains high as more people move into the area. Thousands of new residents are coming to the Rocket City every year, and the growth does not look like it’s slowing any time soon.

The Huntsville metro area has increased in population by more than 40,000 people since the 2020 census — 10,188 new residents per year, to be exact.
