Will it snow in Huntsville this winter? (Ben Johnson / Hville Blast)

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently released its first outlook for winter 2025-26 and it looks like Alabama is set for above average temperatures with most of the state expected to get below average precipitation.

Here’s an early look at winter in Alabama:

North Alabama is usually good for a day or two of snow each year, so chances are good that will happen again. But to what extent?

The good news (if you are hoping for snow), is that last year’s first winter outlook from the NOAA predicted an even drier and warmer season. But we still had one of the most historic snowfalls in Alabama’s recorded history.

Here are some more highlights from the report:

  • Most of Alabama (excluding areas north of the Tennessee River) will see drought conditions persist.
  • The greatest likelihood for drier-than-average conditions are over the far southeast U.S.
  • La Niña: Conditions are present and favored to persist through December 2025 – February 2026, with a transition to neutral likely in January-March 2026.
