While cold weather is often welcomed here in North Alabama after a long and hot summer, freezing temperatures the ones we are expecting during this Arctic blast can be dangerous.

Here are a few tips for keeping safe and warm for the next several days:

  • Dress warmly with layers limiting skin exposure and limit time outside.
  • Keep your gas tank over half full and notify family if you are traveling.
  • Slow drip faucets, use caution with indoor heaters and check heating vents for ice buildup.
  • Cover outdoor faucets and wrap any exposed pipes to lower your chance of pipes bursting.

Not only is it important to keep yourself and your kiddos warm during freezing weather, but don’t forget your four-legged family members.

The National Weather Service has some practical tips to keep your furry friend safe:

  • Check your pet’s food and water, making sure the water doesn’t freeze.
  • Don’t leave your pet in a car alone when it’s cold.
  • Never let your pet off its leash when there is snow or ice. Keep walks to a minimum.
  • Wipe off your pet’s legs, stomach and paws after a walk outside. Be sure there isn’t any salt, antifreeze, snow or ice on your furry friend.
