The summer months can pack a pretty hot punch here in Alabama, and with the Huntsville area reaching some record highs last summer, we can likely expect more of the same this summer.

That means you’ll need to take steps to keep yourself safe from the heat. But don’t forget your four-legged friends too.

Here’s how to keep your pet safe from the heat:

Huntsville Animal Services has some valuable guidelines for keeping pets safe in the heat:

  • Make sure the ground isn’t too hot for paws

An easy way to do this is to put your hand to the ground for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, chances are it’s too hot for them.

When the temperatures outside are in the upper 80s or low 90s, concrete’s temperature can climb to 125º, and the temperature of asphalt can climb all the way up to 150º.

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

If you’re walking outside with your dog and feel thirsty, remember that your dog also gets thirsty.

Bring water with you on walks, and look into products like portable dog bowls for you to make sure your pet is getting the proper hydration they need to be their happiest and healthiest.

  • Dress Properly (both you, and your dog)

Certain dog breeds are accustomed to chillier climates, and grow fur to accommodate those climates. However, many Huntsvillians have Huskies or other Northern dog breeds, which would benefit from getting their long coat shaved during the hottest months.

Talk to your vet or groomer on how you can keep your dog safest and most comfortable during the summer.

  • Prioritize timing

Around 3PM is when the heat is at its peak during the day. It is essential to bring pets in during this time to keep them safe, as even a few minutes outside can be enough to drain their energy.

  • Limit time in the sun during the heat of the day

If taking walks during the day, try and go places where your pets can walk on grass if their paws get too hot. You can also take shaded paths or places with a lot of trees. This will help avoid risks at the hottest time of day.
