How to help Huntsville animal services’ overcrowding problem
Reading time: 2 minutes
Huntsville Animal Services is experiencing severe overcrowding as hundreds of animals are being turned in but very few are being adopted.
Huntsville animal services waiving adoption fee to promote fostering and adopting
From now until the end of the month, adoption fees are being waived for most adult pets. Adopted animals will come with a city license and a free bag of pet food while supplies last.
If unable to adopt, the shelter offers a foster program for individuals to take part in. They would care for their foster animals until a permanent home is found, and are also allowing weekend-long fostering for animals to have a short break from stressful shelter conditions.
It is important to note that Huntsville Animal Services’ policy includes putting down animals experiencing aggression after lengthy stays. As the shelter experiences overcrowding with over 100 dogs and 60 cats, the animals are naturally stressed and are in much need of more permanent homes.
For those wishing to adopt, each pet is spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated before leaving the shelter.
Why overcrowding has become a big problem
During the summer there is a larger influx of strays as many pets escape from their homes. Additionally, the large number of strays are caused by owners who refuse to spay/neuter their pets leading to more animals than one can take care of.
