Want to learn more about city government? (Ben Johnson / Hville Blast)

Are you interested in city/municipal government? Register for Huntsville’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) fall 2024 session to learn about what it takes to govern Huntsville and what citizens can do to improve their city. Read more for details below.

Why civic engagement is important

The Civic Engagement Academy (CEA) is a six-week FREE program presented by the city’s ODEI. You will have the opportunity to learn from officials and receive very marketable skills and knowledge.

The intention for this program is to empower and educate individuals on community involvement.

Their learning methods include both a classroom setting and an interactive environment to provide an understanding of civic engagement.

There are fifty spots open for applicants, whose eligibility must include being 19 or older and a resident of, business owner or student in Huntsville or the surrounding area.

Graduating from this program involves completing at least five of the six classes, which take place Tuesdays from 6PM-8PM. The curriculum covers topics such as:

  • Community resources
  • Engagement
  • Growth
  • Maintenance
  • Politics
  • Security

The CEA is encouraged for current or future influencers seeking to make a positive impact on the community.

“The Civic Engagement Academy is more than a program; it’s a gateway to fostering positive community impact. We encourage all eligible individuals who share our commitment to community involvement to apply and embark on this transformative journey with us.”

Kenny Anderson, Huntsville ODEI Director

You can apply to register for the course here, or learn more on Huntsville.gov. This is an exciting chance for citizens of a growing city, and a great opportunity for those wishing to be a better informed citizen.
