Home tips from a Huntsville Utilities expert

After 28 years in the utilities industry, Bradley has picked up a few ways to save energy at home, starting with his own.
“I would definitely say my role makes me think twice about my energy habits in my own home.
The first thing I did was put a smart thermostat in my house so I can get savings there.
I also make sure to regularly check my air filters and service my HVAC unit.”

❄️ DYK: The average first freeze in Huntsville is November 2, according to the National Weather Service.
With the winter weather coming up, now is the perfect time to start winterizing your home.
Bradley’s top 5 home energy-saving tips
- Have your HVAC system serviced + replace your air filters 🔧
- Ensures your system is operating efficiently + identifies any potential issues before switching to heating mode
- Some air filters last 60 or 90 days—know your filter type + set reminders to replace it on time to prevent clogging
- Inspect your fireplace + chimney 🪵
- Regularly cleaning wood-burning fireplaces helps prevent chimney fires
- Gas logs should be inspected by a qualified professional
- Test smoke + carbon monoxide (CO) detectors + replace batteries as needed
- Disconnect outdoor hoses + install foam insulation cover over spigots 💧
- Helps prevent your outdoor spigot from freezing + bursting during cold weather
- Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans 🔄
- Running ceiling fans clockwise at a low speed will help circulate warm air back into the room (the opposite applies during summer months)
- Check windows + doors for air leaks 🪟
- Caulking around windows + replacing weatherstripping on exterior doors will help reduce drafts
Bonus tip: If you don’t already have a smart thermostat, you can claim one for FREE through the TVA EnergyRight® Smart Thermostat Rewards Program.
