Reading time: 2 minutes
If you opted for a real Christmas tree this year, you have a couple choices for what to do with it after the holidays have ended.
Luckily, Huntsville and Madison have a few options to help you.
Give your tree a new life by reusing it
Before you recylce your tree, consider reusing it.
There are several easy ways to reuse a Christmas tree according to The Arbor Day Foundation. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Turn your tree into firewood or mulch
- Use your tree’s ash to fertilize your garden
- Bundle the needles for a DIY air freshener
- Transform the trunk into keepsake coasters
Drop off your tree at Operation Christmas Cleanup
Operation Christmas Cleanup will occur on Jan. 6 from 8AM to 1PM.
Two locations will recycle live trees and other renewable materials:
- Huntsville– John Hunt Park, 2315 Airport Road
- Madison– Madison City Schools Stadium, 211 Celtic Drive
The trees will be chipped and used as mulch around city facilities. Before bringing your tree, remove all lights and ornaments. The project will also accept:
- Flattened cardboard
- Batteries
- Electronics
However, they will not accept:
- Artificial trees
- Lights or ornaments
- Styrofoam and packing materials
- Wrapping paper
The rain date for this event is Sat., Jan. 13.
Can you leave your Christmas tree on the curb?
The City of Huntsville will take your Christmas tree as yard waste so make sure to place it 5 to 8 feet away from your green bin.
Artificial trees can be disposed with regular trash.
Remember, the holidays will impact your garbage pickup schedule.
