Breeze Airways to expand services at Huntsville Airport
Huntsville International Airport received some good news from one of its carriers this week as Breeze Airways announced it is expanding its service at HSV.
The low-cost airline has new non-stop flight offerings to and from Las Vegas. Here’s what to know:
Breeze Airways expands non-stop flights
The loss of Frontier Airlines earlier this year means fewer low-cost flights in and out of HSV, but Breeze Airways announced that it will offer inexpensive non-stop flights from HSV to Las Vegas, beginning this week.
Booking travel to Las Vegas Friday and Monday for travel from October 26 through February 14 can cost as little as $99 one-way, according to an announcement today from the airline.
Breeze will operate all Las Vegas new routes with its fleet of Airbus A220s. Breeze has ordered 80 new Airbus A220-300 aircraft, that will be delivered one per month over the next six years, with options for 40 more.
What about Southwest Airlines?
People always ask when doscussing the Huntsville airport if and when Southwest Airlines will be brought on as a carrier.
New HSV CEO Butch Roberts told AL.com last week that getting Southwest Airlines to Huntsville was an effort that began years ago but right now looks like wishful thinking, due largely to Huntsville’s proximity to Birmingham and Nashville — two airports that are served by Southwest.
“If Huntsville was years ago what Huntsville is today with the growth we’ve had, (Southwest Airlines) might be here. When they went to Birmingham and Nashville, and you draw a circle, we’re already in their circle. And people are willing to drive.”
Huntsville International Airport CEO Butch Roberts in an AL.com interview
The airport launched a fairly aggressive social media campaign to try to lure Southwest to HSV in 2020, and city officials have made an effort to reach out to Southwest to court the nation’s largest low-cost airline as a carrier, but to no avail.
“Timing is everything, of course, and while the time may not have been right 10 years ago for Southwest Airlines, it doesn’t mean there won’t be a time in the future.”
Mayor Tommy Battle
Both Battle and Roberts say efforts to lure Southwest to Huntsville are not done, but an agreement between the two entities is not happening any time soon.
