Huntsville airport weathering the TSA funding storm for now

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is facing severe staffing shortages and operational strain due to a federal funding impasse. A 43-day government shutdown has forced thousands of officers to work without pay, leading to increased departures and higher-than-average call-out rates during the busy spring break travel season.

However, the Huntsville International Airport is actually weathering the storm with some success, comparatively speaking.

HSV officials say any effects from the TSA funding issue have thus far been minimal, and the issue has not had near the effect that larger airports are seeing.

HSV operations moving along nicely

Larger airports are naturally going to experience more wait times and longer lines just because of their passenger volume, but reports out of airports in Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte and others here in the South have passengers waiting at TSA checkpoints for several hours. Luckily for HSV passengers, that does not seem to be the case at the moment.

“We have observed that our TSA Checkpoint lanes are operating normally, but we still encourage travelers to plan to arrive to Huntsville International 90 minutes to two hours prior to departure time.”

Mary Swanstrom, HSV spokesperson

One of the advantages of flying out of a smaller airport like HSV is that the lines do tend to be shorter at the TSA checkpoints and at the ticketing counter.

The airport reported 122,433 passengers traveling in and out of HSV in February, and March numbers are expected to be even higher. Last year, HSV set an all-time record passengers flying in and out of the airport.
