If you are looking for a four-legged friend to add to your household, this is a good time to adopt a pet at Huntsville Animal Services. Beginning Friday and extending through next week, Huntsville Animal Services will waive adoption fees on most shelter pets.

This is part of a “clear the kennels” initiative by HAS, which currently has an abundance of animals in its shelter.

Adopt A Shelter Pet Day was officially celebrated Tuesday, April 30, but the City of Huntsville is extending the cause.

Animal Services interim director Virgie Graham said the shelter is full after taking in 70 dogs last week. Beginning May 3, the shelter is waiving fees on most adult dogs and cats through May 11.

“We need your help to solve the problem in Huntsville and across the country,” Graham said. “We’re slashing fees and encouraging adoptions for National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, but we really need more people to adopt, foster and take advantage of spay and neuter programs.”

Each pet is spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated before leaving the shelter. The animals also come with a city license and a free bag of pet food.

Other ways to help

If this is not the right time for you to adopt a new pet, HAS also offers a foster program that temporarily removes animals from the shelter and can improve their chances of being adopted.
