Huntsville Animal Services has entered crisis level four after recently rescuing 77 animals—65 of which were small to medium sized dogs. This influx of population has critically stressed the infrastructure of the animal shelter.

“Our kennels are overflowing and we’re utilizing every available space to ensure these animals receive the care they desperately need. Every kennel is full and the dogs are feeling the effects. Our amazing staff and incredible rescue partners are working hard, but the shelter is overwhelmed.”

John Fischer, Director of Huntsville Animal Services

As a member of the Huntsville community, there are multiple ways you can help—keep reading to find out how!

Adoption

If you were already thinking about adopting a new furry family member, now is the perfect time! Every dog adopted is a kennel opened up so more dogs can have a comfortable space of their own.

The Huntsville Animal Services Instagram page posts dogs available for adoption nearly everyday, and you can find the whole list of available adoptees on their website. You can also visit their shelter in person:

  • Location: 4950 Triana Blvd SW, Huntsville, AL 35805
  • Hours: M, W, Th, F 9AM-5PM; Tues 9AM-6PM; Sat 9AM-3PM

If adoption isn’t currently in the cards but you still feel the urge to help, Huntsville Animal Services has three different programs for fostering animals. Find out more information on their programs here.

  • Foster-to-rehome: In this program, you will care for the animal until it’s adopted by its forever family. This is also a great opportunity for the animal to socialize outside of the shelter.
  • Foster-to-adopt: This program allows you to experience a 14-day trial period with an animal before permanent adoption. It can be thought of as a kind of “test drive”, to make sure the animal will fit well in your home.
  • Sleep-over: This new program allows you to house an animal at your home for 1-4 days. This is a great way to help Huntsville Animal Services in the short-term, without any sort of long-term commitment.

If you can participate in any of these programs, Huntsville Animal Services will surely appreciate it. Every animal that finds a foster home, even if only for a few days, opens up critical kennel space in the shelter.
