Huntsville City Council approves $360M operating budget for new year

The Huntsville City Council has approved its operational budget for the 2027 fiscal year, which runs from October 1, 2026, until September 30, 2027.

In total, the budget is worth $360,593,840, which includes $14,788,543 for outside agencies. Also, the Lodging & Liquor fund provides $17,015,229, which is not a part of the original $360M, for outside agencies.

Outside agencies are organizations that aren’t departments of the City of Huntsville, but receive funding to provide services or programs that benefit the community. Arts and cultural organizations are a great example.

What is included in the 2027 Huntsville City Council budget?

The 2027 budget calls for several infrastructure and quality of life upgrades around the city, including close to $40M worth of road improvement and maintenance projects. Here’s what you can expect in the upcoming year:

• Multimodal transportation project consisting of new greenways and sidewalks totaling $15M
• Reinvestment corridors near Research Park, Mill Creek and downtown totaling $18M
• Hiring 18 additional public safety personnel
• Multi-year capital plan calls for a new police precinct, multiple fire stations and library facilities
• Improvements and expansions at several parks totaling $35.4 million
• Commercial redevelopment along Memorial Parkway
• 2% cost-of-living adjustment for City employees
• $40M worth of road improvement and maintenance projects
