More than 1,000 people gathered in the Mars Music Hall at the Von Braun Center Wednesday night to find out the name, logo and colors of Huntsville’s new pro soccer team. The Huntsville City Football Club, or HCFC, was introduced to the large crown with an enormous applause and the kind of enthusiasm officials with the team’s parent club in Nashville were hoping for.

Here are the latest details on the team:

Team officials unveiled the logo and team colors and crest in a video that explained that the round shape of the logo is meant to mimic both the seal and the shape of rocket boosters while the shooting star represents the city’s history with the space industry, as does the logo’s checkerboard design (meant to pay tribute to the pattern on Saturn I rockets).

Mayor Tommy Battle has been one of the champions for getting pro soccer to the city, and was on hand Wednesday night to help announce the new team’s name and crest. As well, he became the first person to purchase season tickets to the HCFC’s inaugural season.

“This is a banner day for Huntsville as we welcome the new Huntsville City FC brand into our community. The Huntsville market is well known for supporting its sports teams, and we’re excited for this opportunity to diversify our offerings and add professional soccer to our portfolio. I’ll be the first to purchase season tickets and can’t wait to experience the matches in Joe Davis Stadium.”

Huntsville’s new pro soccer team, as we discussed back in July, will be an MLS NEXT Pro affiliate of the Nashville Soccer Club.

MLS NEXT Pro is the third tier division of Major League Soccer, and currently has 21 clubs in cities like Chicago, Houston, Kansas City, Orlando, Portland and Vancouver.

MLS NEXT Pro completes the integrated player pathway from MLS NEXT through to MLS first teams and allows young players and experienced professionals the opportunity to develop and showcase their talents while competing for an MLS NEXT Pro championship.

The team will play at what will be the newly-renovated Joe Davis Stadium. Renovations to Joe Davis Stadium will be completed by fall of next year, according to developers Chapman-Sisson.
