The Huntsville City Council has chosen to name the new Huntsville Arboretum at John Hunt Park after Joy McKee, who was the long-standing Director of Landscape Management before she retired. The new name will be “Joy McKee Arboretum,” which is a great way to honor someone with such a lengthy record of serving Huntsville.
In case you’re wondering, “what the heck is an arboretum?” — it is a specialized collection of living trees or other plants that essentially serves as a outdoor museum. They are critical to scientists as they study subjects like biodiversity.
As well, it’s a fabulous recreational activity for the public.

Joy McKee, as mentioned above, served as the Director of Landscape Management for 22 years. In this role, she was vital in the creation of new natural public areas and the expansion of Huntsville’s tree canopy. Her service to the city went far beyond just her occupation—she was also a board member of Operation Green Team for 28 years and spent 26 years on the City’s Beautification Board.
“Joy’s vision and passion for preserving and expanding Huntsville’s green spaces have left an indelible mark on our city…The arboretum is a fitting tribute to her decades of work ensuring that future generations can enjoy a healthier, more beautiful environment.”
Brian Walker, Landscape Management Director
