Incoming severe weather forces early school dismissals in Tennessee Valley
School systems throughout the Tennessee Valley have announced closings, early dismissal or virtual learning in anticipation of severe weather throughout Thursday, February 17th.
The National Weather Service Office Huntsville Office is calling on residents to “BE WEATHER AWARE predicting:
- High gusty winds all day with gusts up to 45-50 mph possible outside of thunderstorms
- Strong to severe storms this afternoon and evening may bring damaging wind gusts and a few tornadoes
Last night, NWS Huntsville posted a useful checklist for residents.
School Early Dismissal & Virtual
Most school systems are closing a few hours early today before the severe weather is expected to arrive this afternoon. We will update the list throughout the morning. A couple of school systems are implementing virtual learning measures.
Florence City Schools: 11:30 a.m. early dismissal pre-K through 6th grades; 12:30p.m. early dismissal 7th through 12th grades
Franklin County Schools: 12:30 p.m. dismissal
Haleyville City Schools: Virtual learning – Thursday
Huntsville City Schools: Early dismissal Thursday: 12:30 p.m. elementary schools, 1 p.m. middle and junior high, 1:40 p.m. high schools.
Lauderdale County Schools – Remote learning – Thursday
Lawrence County Schools: 12:30 p.m. dismissal Thursday
Limestone County Schools: Early dismissal Thursday: 12:40 p.m. for elementary schools, 1 p.m. for high schools
Madison County Schools: 12:15 p.m. dismissal for high school and middle school campuses; 1 p.m. dismissal for elementary and intermediate schools
Muscle Shoals City Schools: 1 p.m. dismissal Thursday
Russellville City Schools: 1 p.m. dismissal Thursday
Tuscumbia City Schools: 1 p.m. dismissal Thursday
