Job Summary
The Senior Electrical Engineer – Transmission and Distribution provides technical leadership and guidance within the Engineering Department. This role handles complex assignments, mentors less experienced engineers, ensures compliance with system specifications and industry codes, and evaluates new products and improvements. Work is performed independently in a lead engineering capacity, and the position may supervise intern employees.
Essential Duties

Provide technical guidance to department staff and review documents for accuracy and applicability.

May supervise and/or direct the project work of electric system designers.

Mentor junior engineers in all aspects of electric line design.

Conduct feasibility studies, prepare design reports, cost estimates, and forecasts based on growth trends and modeling data.

Ensure plans and specifications comply with Huntsville Utilities policies, industry standards, and codes (NEC and NESC).

Perform constructability reviews and address deficiencies in design or maintenance.

Review, update, and prepare electric construction standards, including job drawings, material lists, and labor estimates.

Prepare contracts for bidding and manage contractor work on line construction, maintenance, and emergency rebuilds.

Serve as project lead for complex projects, supervising engineers and designers as needed.

Stay current on industry standards and update company specifications accordingly.

Prepare and review project budgets and justifications.
Additional Duties

Perform advanced engineering functions in electric distribution and transmission design and operations.

Resolve complex customer and technical issues beyond the scope of less experienced staff.

Maintain relationships with City, County, and State entities; coordinate with other departments on project impacts and resource needs.

Evaluate new products and trends, recommending improvements.

Respond to emergency call-outs and assist in restoration management and prioritization.

Promote and enforce compliance with safety practices and policies.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education/Certifications/Training
-
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution required.
-
Alabama Professional Engineering License required or must be obtainable by comity within six (6) months of hire.
Experience/Skills
-
Minimum 10 years of practical experience with 12–25 kV distribution and 46/115/138/161 kV transmission systems.

Experience with NESC compliance and modeling software such as Synergi, ETAP, or equivalent.

Ability to conduct system performance analysis and recommend improvements.

Progressive experience in line design, developing/revising construction standards, and applying industry codes for distribution and transmission systems.

Knowledge of materials, equipment, and system model planning.

Experience with integrated business, design, and mapping systems.

Vehicle, computer, software (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, NiSC, Bentley, Mapping/GIS software, etc.), two-way radio, telephone, and calculator.
Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions

Sedentary office work with occasional extended fieldwork in inclement weather for storm restoration coordination.
