Job Overview
This full-time, non-exempt position within the Customer Care Department involves fieldwork related to utility service activation, disconnection, and meter reading. The role requires strong customer service skills, attention to safety, and the ability to handle conflict in the field.
Compensation and Benefits

Hourly Rate: $23.44 – $29.66

Status: Non-exempt (eligible for overtime)

Key Responsibilities
-
Turn electric, water, and gas services on/off at customer request or for delinquent accounts
-
Read and operate electric, gas, and water meters accurately and safely
-
Detect and report unauthorized utility use
-
Disconnect services for non-payment or missing deposits
-
Complete meter orders and record readings
-
Assist with account verifications, audits, and meter re-reads
-
Report leaks or safety issues related to gas and water services
-
Collect payments and applications at contract apartments and off-site payment boxes
-
Respond to customer issues, de-escalate hostile situations, and promote goodwill
-
Assist during power outages and coordinate with other departments as needed

Handle all tasks in a customer-focused and safety-conscious manner

Physical and Environmental Requirements

Work outdoors in all weather conditions, up to 8 hours per day

Lift objects up to 50 lbs occasionally

Perform routine office tasks for documentation and follow-up

Available for second shift and on-call rotations

Role is considered safety-sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing
Education and Experience
-
Required: High school diploma or equivalent
-
Preferred: Associate of Applied Science in Electronics

Experience:
-
Minimum of 3 years in meter reading, construction, or basic electrical work

Outdoor work experience preferred
-
Familiarity with Huntsville Utilities service area is a plus
