The Meter Technician is responsible for installing, testing, and maintaining all types of electric meters and associated equipment both in the field and in the shop. The role includes investigating meter issues, maintaining inventory and service records, and ensuring accuracy and safety in all aspects of metering. Technicians interact directly with customers, contractors, and internal teams while upholding compliance with codes, regulations, and best practices.


Compensation and Benefits

  • Offer Range: $43.40 per hour

Key Responsibilities

  • Read, install, test, and maintain electric meters in both shop and field environments

  • Read gas and water meters as needed

  • Install and remove all types of meters, recorders, and instrument transformers

  • Construct and maintain instrument transformer metering installations

  • Inspect and test instrument transformer metering systems in the shop and field

  • Maintain maintenance logs and inventory records for meters and related equipment

  • Investigate customer complaints or metering discrepancies; recommend and implement corrective actions

  • Issue meters to field personnel for installation

  • Interact professionally with customers, contractors, and Huntsville Utilities personnel regarding service and metering


Additional Duties

  • Assist with on-the-job training of less experienced meter technicians

  • Terminate service conductors at the transformer on new services over 600 amps

  • Execute cut orders, set orders, and removal orders for services over 400 amps including CT services and bolt-in meter bases

  • Respond to trouble calls for high-capacity services

  • Promote and practice safety procedures, tools usage, and equipment standards

  • Perform duties in accordance with all codes, safety standards, and Huntsville Utilities procedures

  • Maintain a high level of customer service and represent Huntsville Utilities professionally

  • Perform additional duties as assigned


Education and Credentials

  • Required:

    • High school diploma or GED equivalent

    • Completion of an applicable Apprenticeship Program or equivalent education from an accredited institution

    • Successful completion of the TVPPA Electrical Metering Course or approved equivalent


Experience and Skills

  • Required:

    • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in metering or electric utility operations, preferably within an Electric Meter Shop environment

    • Strong understanding of metering equipment, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety best practices


Working Conditions

  • Environment: Outdoor work in all weather conditions; shop and field settings

  • Physical Demands: Manual dexterity, prolonged standing, lifting and moving up to 50 lbs., climbing, color differentiation

  • Tools and Equipment: Meter test equipment, utility vehicles, two-way radios

  • Hazards: Potential exposure to electrical shock


Additional Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

  • Must have or obtain a Class “A” CDL

  • Subject to on-call and emergency duty assignments

  • This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing
