Compensation and Benefits

Job Statement

The Meter Technician installs, tests, and maintains electric meters while managing inventory and maintaining accurate records of work performed.


Essential Duties

  • Read, test, install, and maintain electric meters in the field and shop

  • Read gas and water meters as needed

  • Install and remove meters, recorders, and instrument transformers

  • Inspect, test, and maintain instrument transformer metering systems

  • Construct and maintain field instrument transformer metering installations

  • Maintain records of maintenance and inventory

  • Investigate meter problems and customer complaints; recommend corrective actions

  • Interact with customers, contractors, and Huntsville Utilities personnel

  • Issue meters to field personnel for installation


Additional Duties

  • Train and mentor less experienced meter technicians

  • Terminate service conductors at transformers for services over 600 amps

  • Complete cut, set, and removal orders for services over 400 amps, including CT services and bolt-in meter bases

  • Respond to trouble calls for high-capacity services

  • Promote and follow safety standards, proper tool usage, and procedures

  • Ensure work complies with codes, safety regulations, and Huntsville Utilities policies

  • Represent Huntsville Utilities professionally and maintain strong customer relations

  • Perform other duties as assigned


Education and Credentials

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Completion of an Apprenticeship Program or higher education from an accredited institution

  • Successful completion of the TVPPA Electrical Metering Course (or approved equivalent)


Experience and Skills

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in metering or electric utility operations

  • Experience in Electric Meter Shop operations preferred


Working Conditions

  • Equipment: Meter test equipment, utility vehicles, two-way radios

  • Physical Demands: Manual dexterity, ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs., prolonged standing, strenuous outdoor work in all weather conditions, climbing, and color differentiation

  • Hazards: Potential exposure to electrical shock


Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license required

  • Must obtain and maintain a Class “A” CDL

  • Subject to on-call and emergency duty assignments

  • Safety-sensitive position; subject to random drug and alcohol testing
