Job Statement

The Meter Technician installs, tests, and maintains electric meters while ensuring accuracy, safety, and compliance with applicable regulations. This role is also responsible for maintaining inventory records, resolving metering issues, and supporting Huntsville Utilities’ customers and crews in the field and shop.

Essential Duties

  • Read, test, install, and maintain all types of electric meters in the field and shop; read gas and water meters.

  • Install and remove meters, recorders, and instrument transformers.

  • Inspect, test, and maintain instrument transformer metering equipment in both shop and field settings.

  • Construct and maintain field instrument transformer metering installations.

  • Keep accurate maintenance and inventory records of meters, recorders, and instrument transformers.

  • Investigate potential meter problems and customer complaints, determining circumstances and performing corrective actions such as repair or replacement.

  • Interact with customers, contractors, and utility personnel regarding metering and service issues.

  • Issue meters to personnel responsible for installation.

Additional Duties

  • Assist with on-the-job training of less experienced meter technicians.

  • Terminate service conductors at transformers on new services greater than 600 amps.

  • Work cut orders, set orders, and removal orders on services greater than 400 amps, including CT services and bolt-in meter bases.

  • Respond to trouble calls on services over required thresholds.

  • Promote and follow safety rules by using proper tools, equipment, and procedures, and encouraging others to do the same.

  • Perform work consistent with applicable codes, safety requirements, HU standards, and good business practices.

  • Promote customer goodwill.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education and Credentials

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Completion of an applicable Apprenticeship program or relevant higher-level education from an accredited program required.

  • Successful completion of the TVPPA (or approved equivalent) Electrical Metering Course required.

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in metering or operations in an Electric Meter Shop.

  • Strong knowledge of meter installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance practices.

  • Ability to interact effectively with customers, contractors, and internal personnel.

Working Conditions

Equipment: Meter test equipment, vehicle, and two-way radio.
Physical Demands: Manual dexterity and strenuous outdoor activity in all weather conditions; ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.; prolonged standing; exposure to potential electric shock; ability to distinguish similar colors and shades.
Other Requirements:

  • Subject to “on-call” and emergency duty.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and Class “A” CDL.

  • Safety-sensitive position; subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
