Job Summary

The Electric Meter Technician installs, tests, maintains, and records all types of electric meters and related equipment. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate measurement of electric service, maintaining inventory and records of work performed, and providing exceptional customer service in the field.


Essential Duties

  • Read, test, install, and maintain all types of electric meters both in the field and in the shop.

  • Read gas and water meters as required.

  • Install and remove all types of meters, recorders, and instrument transformers.

  • Inspect, test, and maintain all types of instrument transformer metering systems.

  • Construct and maintain field instrument transformer metering installations.

  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance, calibration, and inventory.

  • Investigate and resolve potential meter issues or customer complaints, determining proper corrective action.

  • Interact with customers, contractors, and utility personnel regarding metering and service matters.

  • Issue meters to personnel responsible for installation.


Additional Duties

  • Assist in the on-the-job training of less experienced meter technicians.

  • Terminate service conductors at transformers on new services greater than 600 amps.

  • Work cut orders, set orders, and removal orders on services greater than 400 amps, including CT services and bolt-in meter bases.

  • Respond to trouble calls on large services as needed.

  • Promote and follow safety procedures, proper tool use, and equipment operation.

  • Ensure all work is consistent with applicable codes, safety standards, and Huntsville Utilities’ policies.

  • Foster positive customer relations and goodwill.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Education/Training/Certifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Completion of an applicable Apprenticeship Program or equivalent higher-level education from an accredited institution.

  • Successful completion of the TVPPA (or approved equivalent) Electrical Metering Course required.

Experience/Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years total experience in metering or electric utility operations.

  • Strong understanding of metering systems, electrical principles, and troubleshooting.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.


Additional Requirements

Equipment

  • Proficient with meter test equipment, vehicles, and two-way radios.

Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions

  • Manual dexterity and ability to perform strenuous outdoor activity in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.

  • Prolonged standing and exposure to potential electric shock hazards.

  • Must be able to distinguish similar colors and shades.

Other

  • Subject to “on-call” and emergency duty.

  • Valid driver’s license and Class A CDL required.

  • This is a safety-sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
