Job Statement
The Meter Technician installs, tests, and maintains electric meters, ensuring accurate measurement and reliable service for customers. This position maintains inventory, records work performed, and interacts with customers and internal personnel regarding metering and service issues. The Technician plays a critical role in supporting safe, accurate, and efficient electric service operations.
Essential Duties
- Reads, tests, installs, and maintains all types of electric meters in both field and shop environments.
- Reads gas and water meters as needed.
- Installs and removes meters, recorders, and instrument transformers.
- Inspects, tests, and maintains instrument transformer metering equipment in both the shop and field.
- Constructs and maintains field instrument transformer metering installations.
- Maintains accurate records of maintenance and inventory for meters, recorders, and instrument transformers.
- Investigates potential meter issues and customer complaints, determining root causes and appropriate corrective actions.
- Interacts with customers, contractors, and utility personnel regarding metering and service‑related issues.
- Issues meters to personnel responsible for installation.
Additional Duties
- Assists with on‑the‑job training for less experienced meter technicians.
- Terminates service conductors at transformers for services greater than 600 amps.
- Works cut orders, set orders, and removal orders for services greater than 400 amps, including CT services and bolt‑in meter bases.
- Responds to trouble calls on services over 400 amps as required.
- Promotes safety by using proper tools, equipment, and procedures and encouraging others to do the same.
- Performs work consistent with codes, safety requirements, Huntsville Utilities standards, and good business practices.
- Promotes customer goodwill.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education / Training / Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must have completed the applicable Apprenticeship Program or possess equivalent higher‑level education from an accredited program.
- Must have successfully completed the TVPPA Electrical Metering Course (or approved equivalent).
Experience / Skills
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in metering or electric operations within a Meter Shop environment.

- Manual dexterity and strenuous outdoor activity in all weather conditions
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs
- Prolonged standing

- Ability to accurately distinguish similar colors and shades
Other Requirements
- Subject to on‑call and emergency duty
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must hold or obtain a Class A CDL
- This is a safety‑sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing
