Job Statement

Provides technical expertise and leadership within the Engineering Department. Handles complex engineering assignments, mentors junior staff, ensures compliance with system specifications, evaluates new products, and recommends improvements. Serves as a subject matter expert in natural gas system design and operations. Work is performed with minimal oversight in an engineering lead capacity. Duties vary based on departmental workload and may include supervision of Intern employees.

Essential Duties

  • Provides technical guidance to department staff; reviews documents for accuracy and applicability.
  • Supervises and/or directs project work performed by consultants and contractors.
  • Mentors less experienced engineers in all aspects of natural gas design.
  • Prepares feasibility studies, preliminary design reports, cost estimates, and system requirement forecasts based on growth trends and modeling data.
  • Reviews plans and specifications to ensure technical completeness and compliance with policies, procedures, industry standards, and applicable codes.
  • Conducts constructability reviews and recommends corrections for identified deficiencies.
  • Reviews construction shop drawings to verify material compliance with project specifications.
  • Performs periodic field visits to confirm proper installation of approved materials.
  • Consults with other departments to address project impacts, processes, and resource needs.
  • Maintains current knowledge of industry standards and codes; updates HU standards and specifications accordingly.
  • Applies practical knowledge of USDOT and ALPSC compliance requirements, including cathodic protection of pipelines and services (desired).

Additional Duties

  • Prepares and reviews project budgets, scopes, and justifications.
  • Performs advanced engineering functions in the design and operation of natural gas distribution and transmission facilities.
  • Resolves complex customer and technical issues beyond the scope of less experienced staff.
  • Applies practical knowledge of gas pipeline, gate station, and regulator equipment design, operation, and maintenance (desired).
  • Maintains relationships with City, County, and State entities; coordinates with other departments to address project impacts and resource needs.
  • Responds to emergency call‑outs and participates in large restoration efforts as needed.
  • Promotes and enforces compliance with all safety practices and policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Education / Certifications / Training

  • B.S. degree from an ABET‑accredited school in Civil or Mechanical Engineering required.
  • Current Alabama Professional Engineering License, or ability to obtain licensure by comity within six months of hire.

Experience / Skills

  • Minimum ten (10) years of practical engineering experience meeting all requirements for Engineer II.
  • Progressive experience in:
    • Natural gas distribution and transmission system design
    • Construction standards and applicable codes
    • Engineering and construction practices
    • Materials and equipment used in gas system operations and maintenance
    • Gas system model planning
  • Fluids modeling experience with GasWorks or equivalent software desired.
  • Experience with integrated business, design, and mapping systems required.
