Offer Range: $110,864 – $134,139

Job Statement

The Senior Engineer provides advanced technical expertise and professional guidance within the Engineering Department. This position handles complex engineering assignments, mentors junior engineering staff, and ensures compliance with all system specifications, codes, and standards. The Senior Engineer evaluates new products, recommends system improvements, and serves as a subject matter expert in natural gas system design. Work is performed with minimal oversight in a lead engineering capacity, and responsibilities may include supervising interns and guiding consultant and contractor work.


Essential Duties

  • Provides technical guidance to department staff; reviews engineering documents for accuracy and applicability.
  • May supervise and direct the project work of consultants and/or contractors.
  • Mentors less experienced engineers in all facets of natural gas design.
  • Prepares feasibility studies, design reports, cost estimates, and system forecasts using growth trends and modeling data.
  • Reviews plans and specifications to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, industry standards, and applicable codes.
  • Conducts constructability reviews and recommends corrective actions to resolve design or maintenance deficiencies.
  • Reviews construction shop drawings to verify compliance with material specifications; conducts field visits to confirm correct installation.
  • Coordinates with internal departments to address project impacts, resource needs, and operational considerations.
  • Maintains and updates Huntsville Utilities’ standards and specifications to align with current and emerging industry standards.
  • Possesses practical knowledge of USDOT and ALPSC compliance requirements, including cathodic protection of pipelines and services.

Additional Duties

  • Prepares and reviews project budgets, scopes, and justifications.
  • Performs advanced engineering functions related to natural gas distribution and transmission systems.
  • Resolves complex customer and technical issues that exceed the capabilities of less experienced staff.
  • Desired experience includes gas pipeline, gate station, and regulator equipment design, operation, and maintenance.
  • Maintains relationships with City, County, and State agencies.
  • Responds to emergency call‑outs and assists in managing major restoration efforts.
  • Promotes and enforces compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Education / Certifications / Training

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution required.
  • Current Alabama Professional Engineering License or ability to obtain licensure by comity within six (6) months of hire.

Experience / Skills

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of practical engineering experience meeting all requirements for Engineer II.
  • Progressive experience with natural gas distribution and transmission system design, construction standards, and applicable codes.
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in operating and maintaining natural gas systems.
  • Experience with gas system model planning; fluency with GasWorks or equivalent modeling software is preferred.
  • Experience with integrated business, design, and mapping systems required.

Physical Demands / Environmental Conditions

  • Primarily sedentary office work
  • Occasionally required to work extended hours outdoors in inclement weather while coordinating storm‑related activities
