Job Statement
The Senior Electrical Engineer provides technical expertise and guidance to the Engineering Department. This role handles complex assignments, mentors junior staff, and ensures compliance with system specifications. Responsibilities include evaluating new products, recommending improvements, and acting as a subject matter expert. Work is performed with minimal oversight in an engineering lead capacity. The position may supervise interns and provides mentoring for less experienced engineers while completing electric line design assignments.
Essential Duties

Provide technical guidance to department staff; review documents for accuracy and applicability
-
Mentor less experienced engineers in electric line design
-
Supervise and direct project work of system designers as needed
-
Conduct feasibility studies, prepare design reports, cost estimates, and forecasts
-
Ensure compliance with Huntsville Utilities policies, NEC, and NESC codes
-
Perform constructability reviews and address design or maintenance deficiencies
-
Review, update, and prepare electric construction standards
-
Prepare drawings, material lists, cost estimates, and construction labor estimates
-
Prepare contracts for bidding to secure contractors for system work, including line construction and maintenance

Serve as project lead, supervising engineers and designers on complex projects

Stay current on industry standards and update specifications accordingly

Prepare and review project budgets and justifications
Additional Duties
-
Perform advanced engineering functions in electric distribution and transmission facilities
-
Resolve complex customer and technical issues beyond junior staff scope
-
Coordinate with City, County, and State entities, as well as other departments
-
Evaluate new products and trends; recommend improvements
-
Respond to emergency call-outs and manage restoration efforts
-
Assist in determining restoration actions and priorities during emergencies
-
Promote and enforce safety practices and policies
-
Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Credentials
-
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution required
-
Current Alabama Professional Engineering License, or ability to obtain by comity within six months of hire
Experience and Skills
-
Minimum of 10 years of experience with 12–25 kV distribution and 46/115/138/161 kV transmission systems
-
Proficiency with NESC compliance and modeling software (Synergi, ETAP, or equivalent)
-
Experience in line design, construction standards, and compliance codes for distribution and transmission systems
-
Knowledge of system planning, materials, equipment, and integrated business/design/mapping systems

Experience with AutoCAD, NiSC, Bentley, and GIS/mapping platforms
Working Conditions

Equipment: Vehicle, computer, software (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, NiSC, Bentley, GIS), two-way radio, telephone, calculator

Physical Demands: Primarily sedentary office work; may be required to work outdoors in inclement weather during storm damage mitigation
