Job Statement

Provides technical expertise and leadership within the Engineering Department. Handles complex engineering assignments, mentors junior staff, ensures compliance with system specifications, evaluates new products, and recommends improvements. Serves as a subject matter expert in electric line design and performs work with minimal oversight in an engineering lead capacity. Duties vary based on departmental workload and may include supervision of Intern employees.

Essential Duties

  • Provides technical guidance to department staff; reviews documents for accuracy and applicability.
  • Supervises and/or directs the project work of electric system designers.
  • Mentors less experienced engineers in all aspects of electric line design.
  • Conducts feasibility studies; prepares design reports, cost estimates, and system forecasts based on growth trends and modeling data.
  • Ensures plans and specifications comply with HU policies, industry standards, and applicable codes (NEC, NESC).
  • Performs constructability reviews and identifies design or maintenance deficiencies.
  • Reviews, updates, and prepares electric construction standards; develops job drawings, material lists, cost estimates, and labor estimates.
  • Prepares contracts for bidding to secure contractors for line construction, maintenance, and emergency rebuilds.
  • Serves as project lead and may supervise engineers and designers on complex, broad‑scope projects.
  • Stays current on industry standards and updates company specifications accordingly.
  • Prepares and reviews project budgets and justifications.

Additional Duties

  • Performs advanced engineering functions in the design and operation of electric distribution and transmission facilities.
  • Resolves complex customer and technical issues beyond the scope of less experienced staff.
  • Maintains relationships with City, County, and State entities; coordinates with other departments to address project impacts and resource needs.
  • Evaluates new products and industry trends; recommends improvements.
  • Responds to emergency call‑outs and manages restoration efforts as needed.
  • Assists in determining restoration actions and priorities during emergencies.
  • Promotes and enforces safety practices and policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Education / Certifications / Training

  • Degree from an ABET‑accredited school in Electrical Engineering required.
  • Current Alabama Professional Engineering License, or ability to obtain licensure by comity within six months of hire.

Experience / Skills

  • Minimum 10 years of practical experience with:
    • 12–25 kV distribution systems
    • 46/115/138/161 kV transmission systems
  • Experience with NESC compliance and modeling software such as Synergi, ETAP, or equivalent.
  • Ability to conduct system performance analysis and recommend improvements.
  • Progressive experience in:
    • Line design
    • Development and revision of construction standards
    • Codes for distribution and transmission systems
  • Knowledge of materials, equipment, and system model planning.
  • Experience with integrated business, design, and mapping systems.
