Job Statement
The Senior Electrical Engineer provides advanced technical expertise, leadership, and guidance within the Engineering Department. This position handles complex engineering assignments, mentors junior engineers and designers, and ensures compliance with all system specifications, standards, and codes. The Senior Engineer evaluates new technologies, recommends improvements, and serves as a subject matter expert in electric distribution and transmission systems. Work is performed with minimal oversight in a lead engineering capacity, which may include supervising interns and directing project work.
Essential Duties
- Provides technical guidance to department staff and reviews engineering documents for accuracy and applicability.
- May supervise and/or direct the project work of electric system designers; mentors less experienced engineers in electric line design.
- Performs feasibility studies and prepares design reports, cost estimates, and growth‑related forecasts using modeling data.
- Ensures plans and specifications comply with Huntsville Utilities policies, industry standards, and applicable codes (NEC, NESC).
- Conducts constructability reviews and addresses design or maintenance deficiencies.
- Reviews, updates, and develops electric construction standards.
- Prepares job drawings, material lists, cost estimates, and construction labor estimates.
- Prepares contracts for bidding to secure contractors for line construction, maintenance, and emergency rebuild work.
- Serves as project lead and may supervise engineers and designers on broad, complex projects.
- Maintains knowledge of industry standards and updates company specifications as needed.
- Prepares and reviews project budgets and justifications.
Additional Duties
- Performs advanced engineering functions in the design and operation of electric distribution and transmission facilities.
- Resolves complex customer and technical issues beyond the scope of less experienced staff.
- Maintains strong working relationships with City, County, and State agencies.
- Coordinates with internal departments to address project impacts and resource needs.
- Evaluates new products, tools, and industry trends; recommends improvements.
- Responds to emergency callouts and assists in managing restoration efforts as needed.
- Helps determine restoration priorities and actions during emergency events.
- Promotes and enforces safety practices, procedures, and policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education / Certifications / Training
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution required.
- Current Alabama Professional Engineering (PE) License or ability to obtain licensure by comity within six (6) months of hire.
Experience / Skills
- Minimum ten (10) years of practical experience with:
- 12–25 kV distribution systems
- 46/115/138/161 kV transmission systems
- Experience with NESC compliance and electrical modeling software (Synergi, ETAP, or equivalent) required.
- Experience performing system performance analysis and recommending improvements.
- Progressive experience in line design, construction standards, and distribution/transmission system codes.
- Knowledge of materials, equipment, and system model planning.
- Experience with integrated business, design, and mapping systems.

Physical Demands / Environmental Conditions
- Primarily sedentary office work
- May work extended hours outdoors during inclement weather to support storm mitigation efforts

- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with internal staff and external agencies
- Strong technical knowledge and ability to mentor less experienced engineers
- Subject to recall and on‑call duty
- Must hold a valid Alabama driver’s license
- This is a safety‑sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing
