Department: Operations Support – Gas Meter Shop
Job Statement
The Utility Worker performs a variety of unskilled and semi‑skilled manual tasks supporting measurement, regulation, and maintenance activities within the Gas Meter Shop. This position assists crews in completing assigned work, maintains tools and equipment, and ensures vehicles are stocked and kept in clean, orderly condition. The Utility Worker plays a key role in supporting safe and reliable gas operations in service to our customers.
Essential Duties
- Loads, unloads, and carries tools, materials, and equipment.
- Operates, under supervision, various hand tools, small equipment, and leak detection instruments.
- Performs meter changes in the field and cleans, repairs, and tests meters in the shop as applicable.
- Anticipates crew needs and gathers required tools, materials, and supplies.
- Places cones and traffic control devices to ensure a safe work area; flags traffic as instructed.
- Stocks the vehicle with tools, parts, water, supplies, and equipment.
- Cleans tools and job sites upon completion of work.
- Performs all assigned tasks in a safe and responsible manner.
- Performs additional duties as assigned based on skills and demonstrated ability.
Additional Duties
- Supports field crews and shop operations as directed.
- Learns job‑related skills to support advancement through the Apprenticeship Program.
- Completes tasks necessary for safe and efficient gas system operation.
Job Requirements
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience
- Experience in construction, measurement, or utility work preferred.
- Experience working outdoors preferred.
- Must pass a Utility Worker skills test.

- Common hand tools (hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.)
Physical Demands
- Strenuous outdoor work in all weather conditions
- Manual dexterity
- Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver tools and materials
Other Requirements
- Subject to “on‑call” and emergency duty
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must obtain a CDL
- Must obtain Operator Qualification (OQ) certification within 12 months
- Advancement to and completion of the Apprenticeship Program is expected; failure to enter or complete the program, or to secure another role at Huntsville Utilities, may result in termination
- Must successfully pass WORK KEYS test
- This is a safety‑sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing
