Position Overview
The Utility Worker performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual work to support construction, facility upkeep, and maintenance activities across the Water Supply Department. This role ensures treatment plants and vehicles remain clean, organized, and stocked while assisting maintenance personnel with ongoing projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform facility upkeep including mowing, trimming, bush hogging, landscaping, painting, and janitorial tasks.

  • Maintain inventory of janitorial, landscaping, and maintenance supplies.

  • Load, unload, and carry tools, equipment, and materials for assigned projects.

  • Operate small equipment such as compressors, hand tools, and power tools.

  • Maintain records related to building and grounds maintenance.

  • Assist with construction-related activities including concrete work, fencing, landscaping, and planting.

  • Support maintenance staff with mechanical or electrical repairs and installations.

  • Clean and organize tools and work areas after job completion.

  • Ensure all tasks are completed safely and in compliance with established procedures.

  • Perform other duties as assigned based on skills and departmental needs.

Qualifications

  • Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent required. Must obtain CDL Class A or B within one (1) year of hire (employment subject to review if requirement not met).

  • Experience: No prior experience required; experience working outdoors preferred.

  • Equipment Knowledge: Trucks, two-way radio, hand tools (hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches), and landscaping equipment.

  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; climb steps and ladders; bend, kneel, and perform manual tasks; visual and manual dexterity; ability to distinguish colors. Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions.

  • Other Requirements:

    • Subject to recall and after-hours duty.

    • Safe handling of hazardous chemicals.

    • Must successfully pass a WORK KEYS test.

    • This is a safety-sensitive position; employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
