Job Statement
The Water Plant Operator II is a technical and skilled position performing analytical and process-related work in the operation of a drinking water treatment plant and meeting distribution system demands, while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Essential Duties
- Perform all duties and responsibilities necessary to maintain regulatory compliance with ADEM, EPA, or other applicable regulatory bodies.
- Ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality potable water and take immediate action if compromised.
- Work independently during after-hours, weekends, and holidays to maintain operations.
- Monitor and control the telemetry and SCADA systems to regulate reservoir valves, wells, and booster pumps.
- Notify the Water Treatment Plant Operator-Chief and Supervisor of any detected water quality issues or equipment malfunctions.
- Analyze raw and finished water for proper treatment and adjust parameters accordingly.
- Operate and regulate chemical feeders and process equipment to ensure optimal treatment.
- Control electric motors, pumps, and valves manually or remotely to regulate water flow.
- Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of plant equipment.
- Review and verify log entries, records, and reports for accuracy at the end of each shift.
- Conduct regular plant inspections, reporting any security issues, equipment failures, or operational concerns.
Additional Duties
- Wash down equipment, basins, and filters, and perform general cleaning using an industrial hose.
- Respond to customer inquiries about water issues or route them to the appropriate personnel.
- Ensure a smooth shift transition by briefing the incoming operator on current operating conditions.
- Assist in training new operators to ensure they are properly equipped and motivated.
- Stay informed about new water quality regulations and treatment techniques.
- Maintain the required continuing education hours in compliance with ADEM Division 10.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education, Certification, and Training
- Required: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Preferred: Associate degree or equivalent coursework in chemistry, math, hydraulics, or computers.
- Certification:
- Must have an ADEM Grade IV Water Treatment Operator Certification or obtain reciprocity through ADEM within six months.
- Candidates who have passed the ADEM Grade IV Water Treatment Operator exam but lack experience will be considered, with employment subject to review if deadlines are not met.
Experience
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in a Grade IV water treatment plant.
- Equivalent experience through training programs, classes, or seminars may substitute for one year of experience, as approved by ADEM.
- Knowledge of water quality limits, advanced water treatment techniques, and plant operations.
- Ability to operate a full range of pumps, chemical feeders, motors, controllers, and process instrumentation.
- Understanding of ADEM Division 7 and Division 10 regulations and laws.

- Other Requirements:
- Must work shift schedules, including weekends and holidays.
- Subject to on-call and emergency duty.
- Safe handling of hazardous chemicals required for the job.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- This is a safety-sensitive position, requiring participation in random drug and alcohol testing.
- Selected candidates must successfully pass a WORK KEYS test unless they have already obtained the ADEM Grade IV Water Certification.
