Job Statement
The Water Plant Operator II performs skilled technical and analytical work in the operation of a drinking water treatment plant. The role ensures the plant meets distribution system demands and remains in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Operators are responsible for protecting public health and ensuring safe, high-quality potable water.
Essential Duties
-
Maintain compliance with all ADEM, EPA, and applicable regulatory policies and laws
-
Ensure delivery of safe, high-quality potable water; take immediate corrective action if compromised
-
Monitor and control telemetry and SCADA systems to regulate valves, wells, and booster pumps
-
Notify Water Treatment Plant Operator-Chief and/or Supervisor of issues impacting water quality or equipment performance
-
Monitor and adjust treatment parameters based on laboratory analysis of raw and finished water
-
Operate and regulate chemical feeders and treatment equipment for optimal efficiency
-
Operate and control motors, pumps, and valves manually or remotely to regulate water flow
-
Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance on plant equipment
-
Review and verify accuracy of log entries, records, and reports each shift

Conduct routine plant walkthroughs to identify and report security or equipment concerns
Additional Duties
-
Perform equipment wash-downs (basins, filters, etc.) and general cleaning tasks

Address routine customer questions or direct inquiries to appropriate personnel
-
Remain on duty until relief operator is present and fully briefed on operating conditions
-
Assist with training programs to prepare new operators for safe, efficient plant operations
-
Monitor developments in water quality regulations and treatment technologies
-
Maintain continuing education hours as required by ADEM Division 10 for certification
-
Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Credentials
-
High school diploma or GED required
-
Associate degree or equivalent coursework in chemistry, math, hydraulics, or computers preferred
-
ADEM Grade IV Water Treatment Operator Certification required, or ability to obtain reciprocity through ADEM within six (6) months
-
Candidates who have passed the Grade IV exam but lack required experience may be considered (subject to ADEM requirements)
-
Employment subject to review if certification deadlines are not met
Experience and Skills
-
Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a Grade IV water treatment plant
-
Equivalent experience through training programs, classes, or seminars may substitute for one (1) year as approved by ADEM
-
Knowledge of water quality limits, advanced treatment techniques, plant operations, and equipment
-
Ability to operate pumps, chemical feeders, motors, controllers, and process instrumentation
-
Familiarity with ADEM Division 7 and Division 10 regulations and laws
Working Conditions
-
Equipment: Trucks, computers, chemical feeders, pumps, laboratory equipment, electrical controls, and motor starters
-
Physical Demands: Visual and manual dexterity, color differentiation, climbing steps/ladders, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs., exposure to outdoor conditions

Other Requirements:

Shift work required; subject to on-call and emergency duty

Safe handling of hazardous chemicals

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

Safety-sensitive position; subject to random drug and alcohol testing

Selected candidate must pass a WORK KEYS test (unless already certified as ADEM Grade IV Water Operator)
