Position Overview
The Water Plant Operator II performs skilled, technical, and analytical work in the operation of a drinking water treatment plant. This position ensures water quality meets local, state, and federal regulations while supporting system distribution demands. Work involves process monitoring, equipment operation, and regulatory compliance with the ability to act independently during nights, weekends, and holidays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with ADEM, EPA, and other regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain safe, adequate potable water supply and take immediate corrective action if water quality is compromised.

  • Monitor SCADA and telemetry systems to control reservoir valves, wells, and booster pumps.

  • Notify supervisors of water quality issues or equipment malfunctions.

  • Analyze water samples and adjust treatment parameters accordingly.

  • Operate chemical feeders, motors, pumps, and valves for water treatment and distribution.

  • Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of plant equipment.

  • Verify accuracy of logs, reports, and records at shift end.

  • Conduct plant walkthroughs to identify and report issues with security or equipment.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform equipment wash downs, filter cleanings, and general housekeeping.

  • Respond to customer inquiries or direct them to appropriate personnel.

  • Maintain operations until relieved by another certified operator.

  • Participate in operator training programs and mentoring efforts.

  • Stay informed of emerging water quality regulations and treatment technologies.

  • Maintain continuing education hours to keep certifications current.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education/Training: High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree or coursework in chemistry, math, hydraulics, or computers preferred.

  • Certification: ADEM Grade IV Water Treatment Operator Certification required, or reciprocity within six (6) months. Consideration given to candidates who have passed the Grade IV exam but lack required experience.

  • Experience: Minimum two (2) years in a Grade IV water treatment plant required (equivalent training programs may substitute for one year). Must have knowledge of water treatment processes, ADEM regulations, and operation of related equipment/instrumentation.

Additional Requirements

  • Equipment: Trucks, computers, chemical feeders, pumps, lab equipment, electrical controls, and motor starters.

  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, differentiate colors, and work in both indoor and outdoor environments.

  • Other:

    • Shift work required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

    • Subject to on-call and emergency duty.

    • Safe handling of hazardous chemicals.

    • Must maintain a valid driver’s license.

    • Required to pass a WORK KEYS test unless already certified at Grade IV.

    • Safety-sensitive position; subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
