Job Summary

The Water Systems Technician Operator I is a skilled technical role responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and mechanical systems that support Huntsville Utilities’ water distribution system. This position also plays a key role in monitoring groundwater plants, ensuring water quality, and maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.


Essential Duties

  • Maintain compliance with all ADEM, EPA, and other applicable regulatory standards.

  • Assist in the operation of the Lincoln-Dallas Water Treatment Plant, ensuring safe, adequate, and high-quality potable water.

  • Independently respond to after-hours, weekend, and holiday operational needs.

  • Monitor and adjust system parameters based on lab analysis and certified operator guidance.

  • Accurately maintain written and electronic logs, reports, and records.

  • Monitor SCADA and telemetry systems to control wells, pumps, and reservoir valves.

  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment.

  • Coordinate with operations to install, maintain, and repair equipment.

  • Maintain up-to-date service and maintenance records for compliance.

  • Assist with condition assessments of equipment.


Additional Duties

  • Perform electrical diagnostics and repairs at booster stations, tanks, wells, and groundwater plants.

  • Install and calibrate electrical systems, VFDs, SCADA, PLCs, and telemetry equipment.

  • Install and rebuild pumps (horizontal, vertical, diaphragm, chemical, etc.).

  • Inspect water tanks (including climbing up to 220 feet carrying up to 25 lbs.).

  • Conduct line flushing, disinfection, and handle hazardous chemicals safely.

  • Assist with booster station construction and other assigned projects.


Job Requirements

Education/Certifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Must pass Grade II Water Treatment Exam within 1 year of hire.

  • Must achieve Grade III (or higher) Water Treatment Operator Certification within 2 years of hire.

  • Must obtain CDL-A with Hazmat endorsement within 1 year of hire.

Experience/Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in electrical or mechanical work.

  • Working knowledge of control circuits, pumps, motors, controllers, and instrumentation.

  • Familiar with construction practices (roofing, framing, concrete work).

  • Basic computer skills required.

Equipment Experience

  • Trucks, heavy equipment, power tools, welders, volt/amp meters.

  • Experience with cranes for equipment removal/installation.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to climb, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Must not be colorblind.

  • Work involves outdoor weather exposure and confined spaces.

  • On-call and emergency duty required.
