Job Statement

Under general supervision of the Crew Leader, this position:

  • Assists in equipment selection and plan layout
  • Assembles and welds pipe
  • Installs steel or plastic pipe to extend mains or run service lines
  • Makes repairs to existing gas lines

Essential Duties

  • Cut, fabricate, and weld all sizes of steel piping (including high-pressure and x-ray welding) according to layouts, blueprints, or work orders using oxyacetylene and electric arc welding techniques
  • Perform TIG welding as required
  • Apply knowledge of the gas piping welder’s code and perform related tasks such as flame cutting and grinding
  • Execute welding procedures on pressurized natural gas pipelines
  • Perform fusion welds on varied sizes of polyethylene pipe
  • Assist crew members in successfully completing projects
  • Ensure that vehicles, time, material, and equipment are maintained and used appropriately
  • Conduct work in a courteous manner to maintain good customer relations
  • Maintain high-quality standards to provide reliable service to customers
  • Assist with the training of less experienced personnel
  • Lead the crew in the absence of the Crew Leader
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Education, Certification, and Training

  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certification:
    • Certified Acetylene and Electric Arc Welder on small and large diameter steel pipe
    • Must pass HU Welder Certification Test prior to employment
    • Must obtain Polyethylene Pipe Welding Certification and API Welding Exam

Experience & Skills

  • Preferred: Pipefitting experience
  • Preferred: Welding experience on high-pressure steel gas mains

  • Detection devices and jackhammers
  • Leak detection equipment

Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions

  • Performs job under various field conditions
  • Ability to manually lift up to 50 lbs
  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions and blowing gas

Additional Requirements

  • Subject to emergency and “on-call” duty
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Must obtain Polyethylene Pipe Welding Certification
  • Must obtain CDL before the 6-month performance appraisal
  • Must obtain Operator Qualification certification within 12 months
  • Employees in safety-sensitive positions are subject to periodic random drug and alcohol testing and testing based on reasonable suspicion
