Kick off the New Year with 3 polar plunges near Huntsville

After a Christmas that felt more like spring—seriously, it was in the mid-70s—many North Alabamians are kicking off the New Year with a fun (and freezing) tradition: the cold-water shock of a polar plunge. Whether you’re a seasoned polar plunge pro or it’s your first time, here are three chilly ways to start 2026.
Decatur’s 41st Annual Polar Bear Plunge | January 1
Now in its 41st year, the annual Polar Plunge in Decatur is one of the longest-running cold-water traditions in Alabama. Hosted by the Community Action Partnership of North Alabama (CAPNA), this event is free and open to the public. Commemorative t-shirts and sweatshirts will be for sale, with all proceeds benefitting CAPNA’s Meals on Wheels and More Program.
Since safety is a priority, life jackets are strongly encouraged for all participants; those under the age of 10 will be required to wear a life jacket. In addition, the Morgan County Rescue Squad will be on site to provide aid.

10th Annual Prevent Suicide Plunge | January 1
Hosted at McFarland Park Beach in Florence, the 10th Annual Prevent Suicide Plunge is a meaningful way raise awareness, support mental health initiatives, honor loved ones and support suicide prevention efforts.

Joe Wheeler State Park’s 2nd Annual Polar Plunge | January 3
If you can’t make it on New Year’s Day, don’t worry—Joe Wheeler State Park’s 2nd Annual Polar Plunge has you covered! Set against scenic views of the Tennessee River, the Polar Plunge is your opportunity to prove to friends and family just how brave you are. Afterwards, warm up with lunch and a hot chocolate at the Park Lodge restaurant.
Although this event is free and open to the public, reservations are required and can be made online.
