Labor Day 2026: What's open + closed in the Huntsville area

Monday, September 7, is Labor Day, which means a bunch of folks will be off work here in the Rocket City. That also means that many of the public services we enjoy and have access to will be unavailable.

Here’s a quick guide to what’s open + closed in and around Huntsville this Labor Day:

What’s closed for Labor Day

Being a federal holiday, Labor Day means all federal offices are closed, as well as all stock markets. Here are some of the closures and changes in services in the Huntsville area Monday:

Federal offices: Closed
State offices: Closed
Municipal and county offices: Closed
Banks: Many closed on Monday, check with your branch
U.S. Post Offices: Post offices are closed, mail will not run. Regular mail delivery and collection will resume Tuesday, September 8
Fed Ex: Closed
UPS: Closed
Financial markets: Closed
Huntsville Museum of Art: Closed
Garbage collection: Residential collection in Huntsville will be delayed one day. Residents should leave carts at the curb until they are collected. In Madison, garbage collection will not occur on Labor Day, with the rest of the week operating on normal schedule. In Athens, garbage collection will run on normal schedule.
Parks & Recreation: All facilities will be closed in Huntsville, Madison + Athens, except the Brahan Spring Park and Dr. Richard Showers, Sr., splash pads, which will be open from 10AM to 7PM

What’s open for Labor Day

While this is not a complete list, there are a bevy of businesses that have officially said they will be open on Labor Day. Most fast food restaurants are open, as well as chain restaurants like Applebee’s, Outback Steakhouse, Starbucks and others.
