Last Trash Pandas homestand could determine postseason spot

The Rocket City Trash Pandas are playing their final home games of the 2026 season this week, but that may be changed to “final regular season home games.” That’s because right now the Trash Pandas hold a half-game lead in the Southern League North Division for the second half.

If the lead remains by the end of the homestand, the Trash Pandas could be playoff bound, and could play a few more home games.

What are the Trash Pandas’ playoff chances?

Currently, the Trash Pandas are 30-27 in the second half of the season, good for first place by half a game over the Knoxville Smokies, and one game ahead of the Birmingham Barons.

This makes for an interesting final two weeks to the season. For those who are not familiar with the Southern League postseason structure, the season is divided into halves. The teams leading their division at the halfway point in the season earn a playoff spot. Then, the records are set back to 0-0 as the second half begins. The teams leading their division at the end of the second half also earn a playoff spot.

This has been a common minor league format, as a minor league team’s roster at the beginning of a season is often completely different than its roster at mid-season or at the end of the season due to players getting called up to higher levels or sent down to lower levels throughout the season.

In the Southern League North Division, if the Trash Pandas maintain their lead, they would play Knoxville in the North Division playoff, as the Smokies already won the first half. The winner of that series plays in the Southern League championship series. If Birmingham jumps both teams down the stretch, the Barons would play Knoxville in the playoff series.

However, if Knoxville jumps the Trash Pandas (which is entirely possible, as they only trail first place by half a game), they will not have to play a first round playoff series and will automatically play in the championship series against the winner of the South Division.

Biloxi won the first half of the season in the South Division, but will finish last in the division for the second half. Pensacola currently holds a 7.5-game lead in first pace for the division, which bodes well for a second half title for the Blue Wahoos. This would mean Pensacola and Biloxi would play for the South Division title and a berth in the Southern League championship series.

The Trash Pandas are at home from September 1-6 against Montgomery, and then travel to Chattanooga to finish out the regular season against the Lookouts September 8-13.

If the Trash Pandas win the second half title, they would host Knoxville for Game One of the North Division championship series (a best-of-3) September 15.
