A lifelong resident of Limestone County, Ruf has run his family farm for more than a decade, after working in Decatur and at Redstone Arsenal. He unsuccessfully ran for the District 1 position in the last election.

Ivey appointed Ruf after Daryl Sammet passed away on November 22 of last year. Sammet, who was 72 at the time of his death, served District 1 on the Limestone County Commission from 1991 to 1998, then took a 20-year hiatus from the position before being reelected for his third term in 2018.
