The legacy of Coach Crawford
The park is a tribute to longtime Huntsville resident and sports figure James C. Crawford. “Coach” Crawford was born in 1942, graduated from Council Training High School, and went on to letter in four sports at Alabama A&M — football, track & field, basketball and baseball — before getting involved in officiating youth sports.
He was the first African-American member of the Officials Association of the Alabama High School Athletic Association, a membership he has held for 45 years.
