With the holidays approaching and folks putting together their shopping lists for friends and loved ones, I was thinking of gift ideas that were not only gifts people wanted, but gifts that bore a more personal touch.

Then I stumbled upon Embrace Candles in Lowe Mill. And I not only found great gift ideas, but got to experience learning the craft of candle-making.

Embrace Candles, located on the first floor at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment, already has a pretty impressive stick of candles, soaps and other cool items for sale, but something that really appealed to my desire to find “personalized” gifts was the store’s candle-making classes.

So with the help of my friends and co-workers Elizabeth and Brenna, I embarked on what turned out to be a rewarding and completely affordable candle-making experience.

Here’s how it works:

  • Sign up for a class on the Embrace website.
  • The sitting fee for the class is just $10, and you either bring your own container from home (that’s what I did) or purchase one at the shop.
  • The cost of your candle depends on the size of your container ($0.08/gram for wax, wick and fragrance).
  • You choose your fragrance from more than  200 different oils (and you can blend multiple fragrances to come up with your own personalized scent).
  • The average participant takes about 30-45 minutes to pour their candle.
  • Candles will need an additional hour to solidify before taking them home.

Here’s a little step-by-step look at the candle-making process:
