Madison City Schools offers free breakfast to students for 2026-27 school year

Thanks to a new grant obtained through the State of Alabama, students at Madison City Schools will have the option of eating breakfast free of charge during the school year, regardless of income status.

Where is the funding coming from?

While this is a program several school systems in the state have already adopted, the 2026-27 school year will be the first time Madison City Schools has participated.

The Alabama School Breakfast Grant is a state-funded supplemental support that provides free universal morning meals to public school students regardless of family income. Distributed through the Alabama State Department of Education, it offsets breakfast costs and encourages local farm-to-school food purchases.

Many other school systems in the state—including systems in North Alabama—have already been using the program, including Huntsville City Schools, Athens City Schools, Madison County Schools Decatur City Schools and Lauderdale County Schools.
