Madison County Courthouse set for demolition after County Commission vote

The Madison County Commission on August 12 voted to demolish the Madison County Courthouse, with plans to build a new courthouse in the same location in downtown Huntsville.
Demolition of the current building will likely begin in late 2027.

Madison County Courthouse to be demolished by end of 2027
The Madison County Commission has considered multiple options regarding the future of the courthouse, including renovating the current facility, which was built in 1967.
However, studies showed that a renovation of the current building would cost at least $10 million.
The existing Madison County Courthouse is the fourth version of the structure. The original courthouse was built in 1818, then was replaced in 1836, and replaced again in 1914.
That means the current courthouse, at 59 years old, is the second oldest Madison County Courthouse in the county’s history.
The Commission also considered dividing the offices of the county across multiple buildings in Huntsville, but that plan also was deemed impractical.
The Madison County Commission will consider design options for the new courthouse, which is estimated to cost $100 million.
