Madison County School System addresses growth with 2 new schools
Reading time: 3 minutes

As Madison County continues to grow, so does the need for more education infrastructure in the area. We have already seen new schools open in the last couple of years in Madison City Schools, and now we are seeing projects in place to enhance the Madison County School System.
One such project that has already broken ground is the new Sparkman Intermediate School, and a project that will commence this summer is a new $53 million middle school in Hazel Green.
Breaking ground on new schools
Nearly $100 million combined will be spent building Sparkman Intermediate School and Hazel Green Middle School.
Sparkman Intermediate School
Ground was broken in the fall on the new $45.7 million Sparkman Intermediate School.
Some features of the school include:
- 44 classrooms
- Four designated special needs classrooms
- Art lab
- Band room
- Two extended learning areas
The campus will open with an estimated 800 students, and the school will be built with a maximum capacity of 1,200 students. The school is projected to open for the 2026-27 school year.
“As a district, this school represents an important step forward in our growth. It’s our first new campus since Madison County Elementary and Moore’s Mill Intermediate were finished in 2014, and we couldn’t be more proud of what it means for our students and community.”
Superintendent Ken Kubik, Madison County School System
Hazel Green Middle School

The system expects to break ground on the new school in Hazel Green July 21.
The MCSS Board of Education approved the construction of the new school, located adjacent to Hazel Green High School, earlier this year and awarded the $53.5 million construction contract to Fite Building Company in June.
Here’s what we know about the new facility:
- It will serve all 7th and 8th grade students zoned for Hazel Green High School.
- It will accommodate up to 1,200 students.
- The school will have its own athletic fields, gymnasium and administrative offices.
- It is scheduled to open for the 2027-28 school year.
Meridianville Middle School will transition to an intermediate school for 5th and 6th grade students.
